On April 21, 2009 President Obama signed into law the bill that makes 9/11 a “National Day of Service”. I say 9/11 is a National Day to be Mad as Hell. In case you missed it- Islamic extremists hijacked four planes, crashed into the Pentagon, took down the towers of the World Trade Center, killed over 3,000 innocent people and the Islamic extremists overseas cheered and danced in the streets. In the aftermath they closed our financial markets for a week and changed the landscape of our nation. News flash: These people do not like us or our way of life and several leaders of these terrorist organizations have vowed to bring down America. Let’s look at some other Islamic extremist terrorist attacks in the past:
October 12, 2000: 17 American Sailors died and 39 were injured in the attack on the USS Cole docked in a port of Yemen. February 5, 2009 charges were dropped against the USS Cole bombing suspect Al Qaeda bomber Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri.
August 8, 1998: Bombs explode at two U.S Embassies in Africa, Kenya and Tanzania, killing 224 people, including 8 Americans, and injuring more than 5,000. Indictments of 11 men, including Osama bin Laden are issued in December 1998- whereabouts unknown.
June 25, 1996: 19 American Soldiers died and 500 people were injured when explosions destroyed the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia. In 1997 Canada caught one suspect and extradited him to the US, but on October 10, 1999 the suspect Hani El-Sayegh was released by President Clinton’s administration back to Saudi Arabia.
February 26, 1993: Six people are killed and over 1,000 injured by a bomb under the World Trade Center. After a five month trial, suspects Mohammed A. Salameh, Nidal A. Ayyad, Mahmud Abouhalima and Ahmad M. Ajaj, were convicted on all counts. Ramzi Yousef, and Eyad Ismoil, the masterminds behind the bombing were convicted in
1997.
August 8,1985: Two people are killed and 20 injured by a car bomb outside the U.S. base at Rhein Main in Frankfurt, Germany.
October 23, 1983: 241 U.S. Servicemen die and more than 100 others are injured in a suicide bombing at the Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon.
April 18, 1983: 63 people killed, including 17 Americans, in the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut.
November 4, 1979: Islamic extremist students took fifty-two American hostages from the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran.
Nearly 20 years of active terrorism against Americans! Do these people seem reasonable? Have they learned their lesson through warnings, negotiation, or embargo? Step away from the crack pipe. All these attacks have one common thread- they were committed by Islamic Extremists. Obama- do not minimize 9/11 for political purposes and extend a hand to the very people who are determined to destroy our way of life. Let America be angry!! Chuck Schumer (D- NY) has said, “"September 11 should not only be a day for mourning, it should be a day to think about our neighbors, our community and our country. We can take a tragic day in our nation's history and turn it into a force for good.” Very noble- but the day of service will overshadow the mourning. We cannot in good conscience continue to “let bygones be bygones” when it comes to the extremist wackos. Our answer a short seven years after the attacks is to memorialize the victims with volunteer service? Am I the only one left who’s still mad as hell?
